The philosopher and the soap maker
An old parable
Noetic hygiene, longer essays and logotherapeutic case analyses gathered in one place.
Back to the main page ←We clean the body because dirt accumulates, and we care for the psyche through rest, emotional regulation and honest relationships. Yet the specifically human dimension also needs regular attention.
Frankl called it the noetic dimension. Noetic comes from the Greek nous, meaning mind or spirit. It is the human capacity for conscience, self-distancing, freedom of attitude, values, responsibility and orientation toward meaning.
The nous does not become dirty like skin. But it can become clouded by conformity, resentment, self-deception, distraction and values we never examine. Noetic hygiene means stepping back, reflecting on the direction of one’s life, listening to conscience and putting recognized values into practice.
Noetic hygiene is a developing educational concept by Michael Oryl, inspired by Frankl’s noetic anthropology. It is not presented as a clinical term coined by Frankl.

Longer reflections connecting philosophy and logotherapy with suffering, freedom, conscience and ordinary life.
Four anonymized educational case analyses. Each follows the same structure: situation, logotherapeutic diagnosis and possible intervention.
These cases are educational material from logotherapeutic supervision. They are not clinical instructions and do not replace professional diagnosis or treatment.
